Photography Project

Places: Almograve, Cavaleiro, Rogil, Aljezur e Arrifana.

Date: 2022 to present.

The idea of developing this project arose in September 2019 after a trip along the Alentejo coast in Portugal where I made several photographic trips, some of which were very poorly planned. One of those poorly planned trips, which I will never forget, was on Barradinha beach near Rogil, south west Portugal. This was the trip that struck me the most, I arrived after sunset and It was a low tide. To get to the beach one has to go down some wooden stairs, where I went almost in the dark, I wasn't prepared for what I saw next.

There, at the bottom of the stairs, I came across a spectacle of nature that seemed from another planet, black stone slabs as far as the eye could see with white quartz inlays in perfectly straight lines that extended for tens of meters, splashed by small puddles of water left behind by the retreating tide. At that moment the puddles and the wet rocks produced blue reflections from the twilight sky and there was also a bit of mystical fog in the air formed by the distant surf. Looking south, relishing those unique rock formations I felt I had descended to a cold alien planet far from our reality, on another universe...

Unfortunately, the planning was insufficient and I didn't even have a tripod with me, so the photos I took that night were mediocre, but the feeling of being in that place lasted for all these years and the desire to go back there and do better too. I started thinking about this project from then on, about capturing these images of a planet that is, after all, ours — translating these sensations through art to an audience interested in nature and photography like me.

I've always tried through my photography to capture not only light, but above all a sensation, something that makes an emotional connection between the person who sees the image and the photographic object, even if sometimes there isn't a specific subject, that awakens something that feels good, calming, cold or dark. In this project I propose to create that connection to the natural environment, from a small rock to the flat horizon as far as the eye can see.
